LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Long Beach Fire Department can expect to begin receiving training on a new paramedic model known as rapid medic deployment (RMD) soon, according to Fire Chief Michael DuRee.

Based on an 8-5 vote on May 15 by the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Commission, the proposed policy #407 that outlines requirements for advanced life support unit alternative staffing pilot programs was approved “in concept,” including two amendments by public member Frank Binch, who represents the county’s 4th Supervisorial District.

Those amendments include requiring phased implementation – meaning only a percentage of the county’s population could be affected by the pilot program during its lifetime – and a financial and operational contingency plan in the event a pilot program was halted and reversed. A third amendment proposed by Binch, to require independent oversight of a pilot program during its run, was overturned.
